Big Island wedding venues guide · Hawaiʻi Island

Big Island venues, the honest guide.

Every major wedding venue on Hawaiʻi Island in one place: where it is, how many guests it holds, the rules nobody tells you until the contract, and what venues actually publish for pricing. Written by a Big Island wedding content creator who's in these venues every weekend.

Every venue, the comparison table, the questions to ask on every tour and a notes box for each venue. Print it or save it to your phone.

Before you fall in love with a venue.

01

West side = sunsets

The Kona and Kohala coast faces west, so oceanfront ceremonies there get the sunset over the water. It's also the dry side of the island. Upcountry Waimea and Hōlualoa are cooler and greener. The Hilo and Hāmākua side is lush and rainy: Kona airport averages about 13 inches of rain a year, Hilo about 130.

02

Read the minimums

Resorts often require a food & beverage minimum, room-night minimums (10 room nights at Mauna Kea and the Westin, 3 nights at the Fairmont) and a 22–25% service charge on top. Budget for all three, not just the package.

03

Check the music curfew

Many venues end music at 9:30–10 PM (Fairmont moves the party indoors until 1 AM). If you want a late night, plan an after-party.

04

Ask about vendor rules

Some venues require their own planner (Marriott Waikoloa) or in-house catering; rental venues like Kona Salt Farm and Holualoa Inn let you bring your own. Make sure your photographer and content creator are allowed.

05

Have a rain and wind plan

Ask exactly which space is held as your backup. Trade winds are real: pin veils, weigh down florals.

06

Time it to the sun

Start your ceremony about 1 hr 45 min before sunset plus your ceremony length. Our free timeline builder does the math for your date.

All venues at a glance.

Beach, park & volcano ceremonies.

Every beach in Hawaiʻi is public, including the sand in front of the resorts. A ceremony on the sand follows State rules, not the resort's. Here's what you need (checked November 2026; rules change, so confirm before you book).

01

On the sand: DLNR “Wiki Permit”

Covers State shoreline, including Kaunaʻoa (Mauna Kea), Spencer, ʻAnaehoʻomalu, Kaʻūpūlehu, Kūkiʻo, Mauna Lani and Hilo Bay. About 10¢ per sq ft ($20 minimum), 2 hours max including setup, up to 30 people including vendors, and $1M liability insurance. No arches, chairs (except for elderly or disabled guests), tents, tables, signs, amplified sound or alcohol, and no exclusive use. Allow a week or two to set up your account.

02

State parks: Hāpuna & Kua Bay

Weddings need a DLNR State Parks Special Use Permit at least 45 days ahead (90 if commercial). Groups of 26+ need a group-use permit. No alcohol, no excessive noise, and the public can't be blocked. Park entry and parking fees apply for non-residents.

03

County beach parks

County parks like Spencer Beach Park issue pavilion and special-use permits (request in writing at least 45 days ahead). The sand itself is State land, so a Wiki Permit still applies there.

04

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Small, private ceremonies need a special use permit ($150 application fee). Approved spots include Kīlauea Overlook, Kūpinaʻi Pali, Hilina Pali Overlook and the end of Chain of Craters Road. No drones, and the area stays open to the public.

05

Waipiʻo & Pololū lookouts

The Waipiʻo Valley road is restricted under county emergency rules (residents, permitted tours and cultural practitioners). Neither lookout publishes ceremony rules, and the State has warned unpermitted wedding photographers before, so ask your planner first.

06

Maunakea summit

Weddings aren't addressed in the rules, and commercial photo or video needs a State Film Office permit reviewed by the Center for Maunakea Stewardship. The summit road is 4×4 only. Many couples choose a lower-elevation sunset spot instead.

Private, members-only clubs

Kohanaiki, Kūkiʻo, Nanea and Hokuliʻa are members-only clubs on the Kona coast with stunning oceanfront settings. Weddings there are open only to members and their families, or need a member to sponsor the event.

Kohanaiki (North Kona, about 10 min from Kona airport): we've captured a sunset beach ceremony here, with the wedding party getting ready in Kohanaiki villas, the club catering the reception and its team helping coordinate the day.

Kūkiʻo (Kaʻūpūlehu, about 15 min from Kona airport): we've worked a full wedding weekend here, with a ceremony for 150 guests on the Beach Club lawn, the reception at the Kūkiʻo Golf Club, and guests shuttled between sites. Expect multiple venues within the club, so plan transport and timing carefully.

Big Island venue FAQ

What is the best wedding venue on the Big Island?

It depends on your guest count, budget and vibe. For luxury oceanfront resorts, couples love Four Seasons Hualālai, Kona Village, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Mauna Lani and the Fairmont Orchid. For a bring-your-own-vendors rental, Kona Salt Farm and Holualoa Inn are favorites. For a ranch wedding, look at Puakea Ranch, Anna Ranch and Parker Ranch in Waimea and North Kohala.

Which Big Island wedding venues have sunset ocean views?

The west-facing Kona and Kohala coast: Four Seasons Hualālai, Kona Village, Mauna Kea, the Westin Hapuna, Mauna Lani, Fairmont Orchid, Hilton Waikoloa, Waikoloa Beach Marriott, Kona Salt Farm, Courtyard King Kamehameha's, Royal Kona, Outrigger Kona, Papa Kona, Huliheʻe Palace and Kona Beach Houses all look west over the ocean. Holualoa Inn looks down over the Kona coast from upcountry.

How much does a Big Island wedding venue cost?

Rental venues start around $1,200–3,000 for the space (you bring caterers and rentals). Resort packages commonly run about $3,800–18,500 before food and beverage minimums of roughly $3,000–20,000 plus a 22–25% service charge. Exclusive buyouts at top resorts can exceed $150,000. Always confirm current pricing with the venue.

Which Big Island venues let you bring your own caterer?

Rental-style venues such as Kona Salt Farm, Holualoa Inn, Puakea Ranch, Anna Ranch, Parker Ranch and Kahua Ranch allow outside (often licensed or approved) caterers. Most resorts require in-house catering.

Can I get married on a beach on the Big Island?

Yes, but beaches are public. A ceremony on the sand needs a State DLNR permit (a Wiki Permit for shoreline, or a State Parks permit for parks like Hāpuna), with limits of about 2 hours and 30 people, and no arches, chairs, tents, amplified sound or alcohol. Resort lawns above the beach are private and follow the resort's rules.

Can guests stay at the wedding venue?

Yes at the resorts and hotels, plus Holualoa Inn (6 suites and 2 cottages), Puakea Ranch (4 cottages), Hale Kukui (3 cottages) and Kīlauea Lodge (12 rooms). Some resorts require a minimum number of room nights.
